At the end of every college football season an award is given out to the nations top college football player as voted on by a group of 941 media members and past winners. This award is called the Heisman Memorial Award Trophy. While this award is highly publicized by the media and football fans throughout the world, here are some interesting facts that you may not know.

History

The Heisman Award originally began by the Downtown Athletic Club of New York City in 1935. It was named after John W Heisman, who was a member of the club. The actual trophy is modeled after former New York University football player Ed Smith in 1934.

It was August 2003 and my team at the time, the Pittsburgh Steelers, was holding the first live scrimmage for training camp. As a rookie in the NFL I had practiced a number of times with the team, but this was the first time I was going to suit it up for a “full contact and tackle goal line scrimmage”. The set up was easy. The first and second team offenses would go against the first and second team defenses. The offense had four downs to score a touchdown. If they scored, they won; if they failed to score the defense won.

Loss of a Legend

Gone are the Wishbone and the Power-I. Gone is the “fumblerooski”. Gone are Switzer and Osborne, and, sadly, gone are the Irresistible Force and the Immovable Object.

The glory days of Nebraska vs. Oklahoma seem to be distant memories. Tomorrow will mark the first time since 1961 that neither team will be ranked in this most hallowed of rivalries. Even with both teams going through some lean times this is one of the most looked forward to games of the season, not just for Husker and Sooner fans but to fans of the Big 12 and College Football in general. It’s a true shame it only happens two out of every four years.

NFL History

NFL was started in Canton,ohio on September 17, 1920 by a group of enterprising men. Initially NFL was known as American Professional Football Association (AFPA). American Professional Football Association later got rechristened as National Football League (NFL) in 1922 and became America’s favorite sport. Jim Thorpe who was a professional Football player was the first president of NFL and helped add credibility and pouplarity for the sport.
